Assignment 1: Unconventional Self-Portrait

#1 Tools & Techniques Explorations

This is the first part of my 1st assignment and probably the easiest one out of all. I was given total freedom by my lecturer to explore different types of lines. I was required to explore different tools around my area to form different lines. I used different tools such as sharpie markers, art pens, cotton buds and 2B pencils for this part of my assignment.

Via this part of the assignment, I got to explore a lot in the design field. This part of the assignment really built a solid foundation for my future design studies. I got to know that different tools really does form different outcomes of lines. For instance, sharpie markers form solid/firm lines while 2B pencil rendering forms soft lines with all these combinations of lines, I am sure that at the end of the day we can form a portrait full of personalities.

#2 Compositional Pencil Sketches

So compositional pencil sketches is the second part of my assignment. What can I say? Difficult? Struggling? Certainly so. As I have not been sketching for quite some time now, I came to this part of the assignment full of doubt and struggles. Nevertheless, with the guidance of my lecturer and some practices everyday, I somehow managed to come out with some pretty decent pencil sketches. I certainly won't stop here, I believe through sheer hard work, my sketching skills will be better than ever.

For this part of the assignment, I was told to sketch my face in different angles and also to sketch people's faces with the continuous lines method. I used only 2B pencil to get the jobs done.

#3 Collages

Collage falls at the last part of my 1st assignment and probably the part that I'm most interested in. Since we are required to use materials such as magazines, newspapers, marker pens and 2B pencils to produce our collages, relying on our creativity is a must at this part of the assignment.

Creativity is limitless. I got to explore many things in the collage section. I explored many different tools such as newspapers, magazines and marker pens. It was fun going through newspapers just to find the elements that best suit my collages. For more inspirations, I always refer to famous artists at the collage field to gain some creativity and such. Overall, it was a great experience exploring tools and techniques for my collages.

#4 Final Artwork

I spent a whole night thinking, what is my life all about? I flipped through all the collages and sketches that I have done for the past weeks and decided to come out with this final artwork.

This is my final artwork and it comes from a part of my life way back then when I was so scared to face the struggles that I was in. I ripped off my face so that I could feel nothing, I had messy thoughts in my mind which represented by the lines at the background. I tried to blend different colors into my life but failed miserably so my life remained black and white back then.

For my final artwork, I used sharpie marker pens and 0.5 art pen to form my lines at the background. Furthermore, I cut out newspapers pages for my background. Lastly, I printed out my face and scattered my features around the paper so that it represents my ripped off face.
