Assignment 3: Book With Patterns

#1 Explorations of Patterns

#2 Book Mock Ups

The first part of our assignment is to explore patterns with different tools and only in black and white ink. For the first few patterns, I focused mainly on using my fingers to create different patterns, so it was kinda bad at first, haha. After understanding more, I started to explore different tools to create more interesting patterns. Some tools that I used are bandages, brushes, water bottle caps and leaves. Those are my patterns results above.

As I understood patterns better, I started to let my imagination run freely and just go with the flow. This is one of the assignments that I found it interesting and will definitely include it in my assignments in the future.

Before going into the pattern book part, we are required to make some small book mock ups concepts to roughly get the idea for our book design. I did around 6 book mock ups in small sizes and I will show some over here for some reference.

Folding method: able to pull it up in both sides (left & right). The book contains white and black pages.

Materials used: used magazines

Method: It's like a book, but what different is that pages on  the inside inside can be turned up and down.

Material used: used magazines

I made a total of 6 book mock ups all together and I chose 1 of them as my pattern book design. I found making book mock ups an interesting method as I get to explore more for my book design.

#3 Pattern Book (Final Part)

The final part of the assignment requires us to make a book full of patterns after we gained some knowledge from the previous part of the assignments which are mark making explorations and book mock ups. I chose 1 of the book mock ups that I have previously done as my final book pattern design. Here is my book layout:

I decided to choose this style as my final design because it's simple and easy for the readers to flip through the patterns. With this design, readers can flip through the pattern pages up and down.

For the cover, I used cardboard as the cover. I cut a hole in the centre so that readers can take a peak on what's happening inside. I used normal thick strings to hold the book pages together. Here is the final product of my pattern book:

As this is the first time I'm making a book, the end result may not look like a well made book.I will definitely use some more interesting book design if I have another chance to make my own book again in the future.
