Lecture 3: Visual Semiotics

For this class, Mr. Choy - our lecturer gave us a lecture about visual semiotics. Our lecturer started the lesson by explaining us some slides about theory.

So what is theory?

Theory is actually originated from a Greek word named 'Theoria' which means 'a looking at, viewing and beholiding'. A theory in modern explanation means a contemplative and rational type of abstract or generalizing thinking, or the results of such thinking. It is also heavily applied in graphic designs and visual communication.

After that, Mr Choy also introduced us to 2 people which are Ferdinand de Saussure and Charles Sanders Peirce. Who are they?

Ferdinand de Saussure

Ferdinand de Saussure was a Swiss linguist and semiotician. His ideas about semiotics laid a foundation for many significant developments in both and semiology in the 20th century. Saussure is also one of the founding fathers of semiotics, which he called semiology. His concept of the sign/signifier/signified/referent forms the core of the field. Equally crucial but often overlooked or misapplied is the dimension of the syntagmatic and paradigmatic axes of linguistic description.

Charles Ssnders Peirce

Charles Sanders Peirce was an American logician and mathematician and is also better known as 'the father of pragmatism'. He is also the founder of the American tradition of semiotics. Today, he is appreciated largely for his contributions to logic, mathematics, philosophy, scientific methodology, and semiotics, and for his founding of pragmatism.
